Trolling fishing is drawing various types of lures through the water either from a moving boat or casting and retrieving a bait or artificial lure from a stationary position. Trawling fishing which is drawing a net through the water is often confused with trolling fishing.Trolling is an excellent and popular method of fishing for the larger pelagic fish such as Marlin, Mackerel, Salmon, King fish etc.Baits which are effective for trolling fishing are best if they simulate dying or injured bait fish. They also have to be visually attractive to the fish. Excellent trolling lures are available in many varieties including:

*Swimbaits are soft plastic minnow like baits which use a swimming wagging tail to entice fish.

*Plugs are a lure which due to a scoop like feature under their heads cause the lure to have an erratic movement when trolled through the water.

*Surface lures float and have various features to attract fish including popping and buzzing sounds.

*Spoon lures are shaped as the name describes can be very effective due to their light reflecting properties due to highly polished finishes on the lure.

*Spinnerbaits can also be very effective consisting of wire bent at various angles with hooks attached and spinning mechanisms to attract the fish. All of these artificial lures are very effective for trolling fishing for the right species of fish.

Baits for trolling are either tied with quality knots like the clinch knot or attached by a snap or swivel device for fast release which also allows the lure to spin if required without twisting the line. Fly fishers use artificial flies which either float or are also drawn through the water to entice the fish.

There are flies that are designed to troll behind a boat for targeting species such as Marlin, these lures have a skirt of plastic and a plastic or metal head, they are usually several inches long. Designed either to jerk from side to side or to displace a lot of surface water creating an attraction for the fish. It is also possible to adjust the action to suit the conditions and the targeted species of fish.

Boats can troll several lures at a time which allows various depths and lures to be trolled when outriggers are used. Outriggers are poles mounted on the boat which are vital for separating the lures and avoiding tangling with each other. Lures and baits are usually trolled at slower speeds around 9 knots for certain species increasing to 15 knots when targeting faster species of fish. Trolling fishing is a very exciting form of fishing and becoming more popular even for those using smaller craft.
